News & Updates

Kittens are adorable little fluff balls of energy, love and fun. What’s not to love, right?

As much as we love kittens and are fortunate to be able to house kittens, New Leash on Life (along with other local rescues) is feeling the stress and strain of kitten season. Kitten season is the time of year when cats give birth, flooding animal shelters and rescue groups across the nation with homeless litters.

Resources already hard to come by—like food, money, and space—are stretched to their limit as New Leash on Life and other local rescue groups are inundated with homeless kittens. Increased intakes of kittens also adds to the work of staff, volunteers, kitten fosters and our vet services, who attempt to cope with the overwhelming number of cats. The increased numbers are also a strain on our budget. Although we project costs yearly through budgeting and work very hard to be good stewards of our resources, kitten season can take a toll on our available funds.

How can you help?

Spay or neuter your cat. Cats can become pregnant as young as five months of age. One pair of unaltered cats and their offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years. The easiest way to make sure there are no kittens without a home is to spay or neuter your cat. New Leash on Life offers a low cost spay/neuter program to individuals and families with an annual income of $45,000 or less. Through our Spay Station, a cat neuter is $30 and a cat spay is $40. To schedule a surgery for your cat, please call (615)281-0664 and leave a message.

Donate. Every kitten and cat we take in receives flea/tick treatment, a Feline AIDS/Leukemia test, vaccinations and dewormer. This care is needed but costly. Donations can be mailed to PO Box 247, Lebanon, TN 37088 or given online through our website www.newleashonline.com

Adopt. Open your home to new cat or adopt a playmate for your existing pets. We have some great kittens and cats available for adoption. Pictures of our available cats and kittens can be seen on our website or in person at our Adoption Center, 407 Jim Draper Blvd, Lebanon, TN 37087. You can also visit cats available for adoption at PetsMart in Mount Juliet.

Volunteer. Socializing cats and kittens is important. Also, extra help cleaning the cat room would be great.

New Leash on Life is a private nonprofit animal welfare organization that has operated in Wilson County since 1978. We are fortunate to be in a community that supports animal welfare.

Help with our "Renovation Reality" Campaign at YouCaring!

YouCaringIf you’ve ever watched the television show "Renovation Realities" on the DIY Network, you know that the best-laid plans for a smooth and quick renovation never turns out like they were envisioned.

We recently found this out with the renovation at the Pet Adoption Center this past winter. What started as a simple plan to paint the center and refinish the concrete floors quickly turned into a much larger project – complicated by what seemed to be a never-ending onslaught of snow, ice, and bitter cold.

When we moved out of the Pet Adoption Center on Jim Draper Boulevard on Valentine’s Day, we thought we’d be at our temporary location at the former Hyundai dealership on West Main Street for a couple of weeks. That soon stretched into more like six weeks.

With the Center bare, we discovered things that had to be done before initial repairs could start – or it would be a waste of time and money because the repairs would not last. Found were things such as cracked walls, rotted wood, mold, leaks, etc. Remember, this facility was built 32 years ago and has seen tens of thousands of animals pass through its doors.

The entire project cost around $16,000...

2015 07 08 1Our mission is to educate - not confiscate.

They need your help!

Wilson County Animal Control is asking if we can help them with volunteers next week, Monday—Friday, 7/6-7/10. They still have the 30 dogs from the rescue last month. Although they usually have 4 staff members, they’ll only have 2 next week and they’re trying to plan accordingly.

If you are available to help any next week, please call 615-444-9775, and let them know when you can help out.

Animal Control’s address is 378 Dump Road, Lebanon.

We know many of you work Monday through Friday but if you have a day off or have a vacation day, your help is really needed!
